Two hours from a limestone cave shrine. Two flights from an orangutan.
Which Batu Caves morning starts early enough to beat the tour buses. What a Kilim mangrove boat really costs in Langkawi. Whether Melaka works as a day trip or wants a night. Reviews of every tour you can book in Malaysia.
Batu Caves, a Kuala Lumpur food street, the Melaka square and a Kilim mangrove river.
The four bookings a first Malaysian week is usually built around. What each costs, and what the people who took it say.

Kuala Lumpur in four shapes: cave shrine, tower deck, street food, or all of it in one day.
Nearly half of everything bookable in Malaysia departs from Kuala Lumpur, which makes the capital the easy part to over-book. Four kinds of day, what it costs to start each one, and which order they work in.

The capital, two island coasts, a Straits port and the Borneo half.
Kuala Lumpur for the cave temple and the food, Langkawi for the mangrove karst, Penang for hawker breakfasts, Melaka for the Dutch square, Kota Kinabalu for reefs and a mountain, the Cameron Highlands for tea and cool air. Six starting points, and the best day out in each.
Borneo is a two-hour flight and a completely different country.
Sabah and Sarawak hold the reef islands off Kota Kinabalu, orangutans at Sepilok and Semenggoh, proboscis monkeys on the Kinabatangan and a 4,095-metre mountain you can be standing on top of by breakfast. Nothing on the peninsula prepares you for it.
Langkawi: the water first, the cable car when the cloud lifts.

The island is ninety-nine islands, and the good ones are reached by hull. Kilim for the limestone and the eagles, Dayang Bunting for the freshwater lake inside an island, and the SkyCab for the one view that puts all of it in a single frame.

Kilim by boat, or by kayak
The same geopark two ways. The boat covers more river and stops at the fish farm and the bat cave; the kayak takes you under the mangrove canopy where the boat cannot go.

Penang is a breakfast island with a UNESCO old town attached.
George Town eats at seven in the morning and again at eleven at night, and the gap in between is murals, clan jetties, a funicular up Penang Hill and a countryside of kampung lanes that most visitors never cycle.
Every Penang day out →Melaka trades five hundred years of harbour politics for one red square.
Portuguese, then Dutch, then British, then Peranakan, all stacked on one river bend two hours south of the capital. Most people come for the day from Kuala Lumpur; the ones who stay the night get the shophouse streets after the coaches leave.

Three things Malaysia has and nowhere else quite does.
Rainforest and beaches run right along this coast and the next one. A river that glows blue after dark, a geopark of 550-million-year-old karst you paddle into, and great apes in the trees they were born in do not.

The Kilim Geoforest
The limestone here was laid down before the Himalaya existed, and the mangrove channels cut through it at water level so the cliffs close over the boat. Brahminy kites work the river mouth, a bat cave opens off one channel, and at the fish farm somebody will hand you a horseshoe crab. Morning runs are calmer and the light is better under the overhangs.

Fireflies and blue tears
An hour and a half north-west of the capital, berembang trees along the Selangor river carry fireflies that blink in unison, and on dark nights the wake of the boat lights up blue with bioluminescent plankton. It needs a moonless sky and no rain, so the tour operators watch the calendar rather than the clock. Most trips pair it with a seafood dinner at Pasir Penambang.

Orangutans in their own forest
Sepilok in Sabah and Semenggoh in Sarawak are rehabilitation centres, not zoos: the apes are wild, they come in to the feeding platforms only when the forest is not already feeding them, and in a good fruiting season nobody turns up at all. Go at the morning feed, stay for the afternoon one, and treat a no-show as the point rather than the failure.

Four things in Malaysia that sell out before you land.
Most of this country can be arranged over breakfast for the same afternoon. These four run on permits, feeding times, entry slots and boat timetables that take no interest in when your flight lands.
- 012D1N Mount Kinabalu ClimbingThe summit trail runs on a capped daily permit with a compulsory guide and a night at Laban Rata. In the high season the beds go months out.
- 02Private Full Day Sepilok Orang Utan, Bornean Sun Bear and Rainforest Discovery Center TourThe feeding platforms open twice a day and that is the whole window. Miss the slot and you are looking at an empty rope.
- 03Petronas Twin Towers Entry E-TicketSkybridge and observation deck entry is sold in timed slots with a cap on each one, and the late-afternoon slots go first.
- 04Taman Negara National Park Trek Day TourIt is a three-hour drive plus a longboat up the Tembeling, so the day starts before six and the transfer has to be arranged, not flagged down.
On the peninsula the three o’clock storm is not a maybe. Plan the second half indoors.
Most of the year the peninsula builds cloud through the morning and empties it between three and six, and the east coast shuts down properly from November to February. Neither is a lost day. Go out at eight, be somewhere with a roof by three: a cave shrine, a batik table, a covered market, a mall aquarium, a hot spring in the rain.
